A Locals' Guide to Bellingham's Treasures
Bellingham caters to health-minded individuals, whether outdoor-adventurer, organic vegetarian or militant vegan. Like other American cities this health consciousness has invaded the nightlife. Smokeless bars catering to the young and active are on the rise across the country. I myself originate from a town that passed severe local laws suppressing second-hand smoke in bars and restaurants. While Bellingham has not fully outlawed the smoker, several trendy bars have listened to the coughing complaints of patrons and offer clean air with their alcohol. Here are the best Bellingham has to offer those who enjoy a night on the town without sacrificing their lung capacity.
For microbrews by the pint, Archer’s Ale house and Boundary Bay Brewery top the list of Smokeless Bars. Archer’s was one of the first truly smoke-free bars in town. Their selection of beer sends a connoisseur salivating, and each flavorful sip can be enjoyed without a tobacco aftertaste. Boundary Bay has been a long local favorite. Boasting their own selection of hearty brews, this smokeless restaurant/bar offers a clean, friendly atmosphere with live bluegrass and dancing on an outdoor lawn.
If live music is your scene, then check out the Wild Buffalo House of Music where blues, reggae and rock from around the country converge without clouds of cigarette smoke. For those who consider their music tastes more refined, the Calumet and Poppe’s Bistro and Lounge offer a clean air of sophistication with live jazz and string ensembles served alongside an array of cocktail concoctions.
Going out on a Saturday night in Bellingham does not need to become a Sunday morning reeking of stale cigarettes. Live music and thick microbrews are available without developing second-hand emphysema. So go out and enjoy yourself.
